Podcast Exemplar: The Allusionist #95

https://www.theallusionist.org/

The Allusionist is a linguistics podcast hosted by Helen Zaltzman. In episode 95, Helen Zaltzman interviews David Peterson, a language creator and writer, who talks about his work making the Dothraki and Valerian languages for HBO series Game of Thrones. I really am excited that I stumbled upon this podcast because I’m interested in linguistics and I am a big Game of Thrones fan. This episode is a pleasure to listen to for me since it combines these two subjects.

Helen Zaltzman’s voice is clear and authoritative, bringing attention to her questions and informative statements during the interview as she guides David Peterson’s passionate delve into language creation for Game of Thrones and in general. Zaltzman did well in gently shaping the conversation with Peterson in a manner that allowed him to go on as much as his passion needed him to. I learned how extensive language creation is and how involved it can be, even more so if there is a written system for the new language.

I think that fans of the epic fantasy television show would enjoy this podcast interview because of the insight given to the Dothraki and Valerian languages creation and development. A part of the interview that I like but also may be on the longer side is Peterson talking about the word “Khaleesi” and the issue of its pronunciation. He goes into depth about his mistake with the word “Khaleesi” and how its current pronunciation isn’t right according to how he constructed the Dothraki language, although it honors George R.R. Martin’s spelling of it in the novels.

Final Project Proposal

For my final project, I would like to create a personal website. I think I would get the most use out of creating a website for my portfolio because I am interested into so many facets of the publishing industry. I love doing editorial work, but I also am very interested in the design and electronic fields as well. I feel that as I take more classes, I find more opportunities to explore in publishing.

I would like my portfolio website to include all of my work for the various field I’m interested in. Also, I wanted to make my personal website a place for book reviews as well. I’ve been interested lately in doing freelance work and also starting a book review side gig. I think there is a way to organize my website so it be both a portfolio and a place for me to grow a book review blog (which can double as part of the portfolio). The target audience would be employers and professionals in the publishing.

Design Exemplar – A Good Movie To Watch

A site that I started recently using for suggestions when I’m in movie and TV show binge mode is A Good Movie To Watch. I love this website because how minimalist and clean the design is. The way the lists of movies are displayed is easy to look at and uncluttered. The website is also very user friendly because it is easy to use the navigation bar to find what you’re looking for. Also, there are various ways to sort what kind of movies and TV shows come up. You can find movies and shows by mood, what type of characters are in it, what mental place your in, the rating, and the language.

Although this website isn’t the most visually appealing with its color scheme or images, it is nicely designed with how minimal it is and how white space is used. I think it would be easy for a website that has a lot of information or lists like this one to look cluttered or unorganized if there were more design elements at play.

For my own website, I would definitely think of adapting the navigation bar and how intuitive it is. I would also consider how to present my information in a way that is easily digestible. Ideally, I would want my website to be more visually appealing while maintaining the cleanness and organization of this one.

Future of 5G Technology

5G (Fifth generation cellular wireless) technology has the potential to change our everyday lives and how we interact with technology. Being initially introduced in 2017-2018, 5G should become widespread and applicable to everyday lives in the next several years. It is rumored to be much faster than 4G and be able to support a lot more data usage while cutting battery drainage. According to PCMag article by Sascha Seagan, “What is 5G?,” this new cellular wireless technology brings “greater speed,” “lower latency,” and larger connectivity to the table. With 5G technology, data will be moving faster and available faster, and capacity for multiple devices will be improved. At first, especially as 4G continues to improve, 5G networks will need to use 4G for initial connections until it can become a standalone network. Since 4G has the potential to become faster, the pros of 5G will be the capacity and low latency. (Seagan)

The speed of 5G technology can cut WiFi out of the equation. Instead of mainly being able to bring portable devices, such as laptops, out to places with WiFi, we would be able to use our cellular internet. However, with cellular networks potentially becoming our go-to for internet, Reed Snider believes that it will also make a new threat of cyber terrorism since hackers could use cell towers to gain access to our data.

Besides, internet speeds for cellphones and portable devices, 5G has the potential to improve AI services as well as VR and AR technology. In terms of AI, communication between devices and calculations of data will be much faster so, for example, self-driving technology could benefit because cars will be in constant communication with multiple devices which will decrease the possibility for accidents. According to Sol Rogers, the low latency of 5G and high capacity will make VR games run much smoother and feel much more natural, which will add to the immersion and make VR technology much more popular than it currently is. It will also cut down interruption from network performance. Also with VR, as with cellular internet, 5G technology will make it so VR is not just confined to PCs. Consumers just need a VR headset and can use it anytime they want.

I really believe that 5G technology is going to change how we use devices in our everyday lives because its capabilities will only improve other technology around us and boost their potentials as well.
